June 10, Sunday,  10:30 am  - 12:30pm

All tours leave from Hyatt Regency

Architectural Tour #1 - Lido Shores (Walking Tour) by Sarasota Architecture Foundation

Guided by Dr. Christopher Wilson   Meet your tour guides

This walking tour will explore the small enclave on Sarasota’s Lido Key known as Lido Shores.  A development established by entrepreneur Philip Hiss in 1950, the neighborhood contains significant residential examples of the “Sarasota School” from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as more contemporary designs.  The tour will start with Hiss’s sales office, known as the Hiss Studio (1951) and Paul Rudolph’s neighboring “Umbrella House” (1953), built as a model home for the development.  The tour will then progress through the streets of Lido Shores, observing how different architects of the Sarasota School (Ralph and William Zimmerman, Tim Seibert, William Rupp, as well as Carl Abbott) developed and enhanced Hiss’ original vision.  In addition, more contemporary projects by Don Chapell, Sweet-Sparkman, Guy Peterson (Office for Modern Architecture) and Jonathan Parks (Solstice Architects), will be seen, narrating how contemporary rules and regulations and have forced designers to be more creative in their endeavor to continue the “Sarasota School.”

Architectural Tour #2 - Downtown Sarasota by Center for Architecture Sarasota

Guided by Harold Bubil   Meet your tour guides

Sarasota’s development history was changed by its economic, cultural and social maturation, concern for design that was appropriate for its subtropical climate, and regulations requiring design that is sensitive to the forces of wind and water during storm events. Participants will learn that traditional and contemporary architectural design motifs have battled for dominance for much of modern Sarasota’s history since the 1920s real estate boom, and that building codes and zoning regulations have created an ever-changing built environment that has dramatically changed the city, to the delight of newcomers and the chagrin of long-time residents.
